an abstract artist
There are many reasons why we choose to live in Cornwall. Clearly the sea, the landscape and the climate plays a big factor in why we wish to live here, but there are other reasons for a few of us, one of those being art! Cornwall is a mecca for all things art related and that’s one of the reasons Kitty found herself here. This is her story and the background on what she’s all about.
Kitty’s life as a child was an imaginative one. She told me “ I am fortunate to have amazing childhood memories of roaming through long grassy fields, climbing up to the top of one particular apple tree, sitting inside willow and hollowed rhododendron bushes and peering out at the world through them, pretending to be invisible” I guess it could be said then that her creative spirit started young. Her thoughts of what she might do in her future at that stage of her life were nothing other than everything. All the usual stuff, Kitty’s words here — “a farmer, fireman, vet, astronaut, mother, beekeeper, builder, fashion designer, arctic explorer” to name just a few.
the great thing about being an artist is that you often end up experiencing and dipping in and out of many different worlds.
So looking back, it could be fair to say that Kitty’s early imaginative years spurred her on to discover art , first with an A level in it and then straight on to a foundation art year at Falmouth Uni, followed by a BA Hons in fine art painting at Bath School of Art and Design. She graduated from Bath back in 2007. Shortly after that, she toyed with the idea that she might like to teach art in some way and found herself a position at a local prep school as their resident artist - It turned out that teaching wasn’t really for her but she put that down to good working experience. Her thoughts then turned to the time she’d spent here in Falmouth and being by the sea. Let’s face it, once you’ve lived here, it’s rather difficult to leave the place but you’ll always come back at some point I’m sure.
Since arriving back in this lovely land, Kitty found herself a shared studio space over at Falmouth Wharf to develop her work further. Once she’d out grown that space she then managed to find a bigger studio for herself over at the Islington Boatyard, Penryn. That’s where you’ll find her today! When I arrived to discover what Kitty’s world was all about, she was immersing herself in paint, not covering herself in it but painting with it. In and around her lay a host of abstract pieces of art she’d put together so I asked her how she would best describe the phrase “Abstract” in her work, “it’s simplifying everyday details and reducing things to their simplest forms” Her studio was crammed full of materials from cork to wire, from cloth to different assortments of wood, and paint of course. All of which have its usefulness to enable Kitty to make a unique pieces of art
Thanks Kitty, I loved your smile. RD
