a landscape artist
For those of us who live and work in this lovely land, we all understand what Cornwall means to us. We’re not lucky as some people might put it, we simply made a choice in life and ended up here. There are also some of us who have recently made those transitions in life that’s brought them to our shores to live and work here and enjoy all that we have to offer.
Sophie is one such individual, a landscape artist that has embraced her love of Cornwall, its beautiful light and the landscape that surrounds us.
Sophie’s background over the last 15 years or so has been in corporate management roles but she’s never lost her love of art that she discovered in her earlier years. She told me “ I always wanted to be an artist” but sometimes in life, it’s all about when the timing is right. That timing for Sophie came about 3 years ago when she moved down to Cornwall and was able to work remotely, but at the same time, she was able to re kindle her love of art and began to develop it and move further forward to becoming a full time artist.
“ I always wanted to be an artist”.
The day I shot Sophie, we walked down to her local cove where she captured the landscape in front of us within minutes. I was amazed how swiftly she worked. We then went back to her purpose built studio which was full of light, airy, canvases and paint everywhere. A lovely working environment for any artist to work in. Sat not too far from her side was “Cassie”, her dog, keeping an eye on what was going on in-between sleeps. Sophie works mainly with oils with the introduction of wax. I’m told that wax allows you to do glazes and thick impasto (a technique used in painting, where paint is laid on an area of the surface thickly, usually thick enough for a brush or painting-knife) whilst speeding up the drying process of the paint.
We learn something new every day!
From a corporate lifestyle, to a Cornish landscape artist, this is Sophie’s world. Thank you Sophie. RD
