a colourist painter
There are those that say that we are lucky to live where we live, but that’s simply not the case. We all made the choice to live here in this lovely land that we all call home. Cornwall has it all for us which includes some lovely natural light which attracts a wealth of artists and painters alike. Sophie is one those painters that saw the light, excuse the pun, and made her move to Cornwall some years ago.
Sophie’s background is a well documented one from the point of being artistic as from her early days. She told me “I’ve been creative from a very young age. My family and teachers encouraged me to draw and paint as I think I must have shown an aptitude and enjoyment of it”
Her artistic nature led her onto Central St Martins to study Fashion Design but painting is where her true love was and still is today.
“I would describe my paintings as celebrating the simple joys in life with a strong emphasis on colour to evoke joy and harmony”
23 years later, we find Sophie well established in Cornwall as a Colourist Painter,“ I place a strong emphasis on the colours I mix and integrate within my work, in order to create balanced pieces which bring joy through colour” Sophie told me. She use’s acrylic paint on either canvas or ply panels and describes her paintings as celebrating the simple joys in life with a strong emphasis on colour to evoke joy and harmony. I’ll certainly second that on the colour front. Sophies paintings are super vivid, colourful and very striking. It can take her anywhere from a couple of hours to even couple of years on a piece if she’s struggling with one, by her own admission but generally speaking it takes her on average a couple of days per painting.
Sophie works out of two studios which are both based in Penzance. Full of that lovely natural Cornish light I spoke about earlier which painters find so enlightening and helpful. She displays her work throughout galleries here in the South West. My time and my cameras time with Sophie were certainly never short of colour to focus on.
